When I was commissioned to paint a portrait of St. Francis for Manchester Monastery, I felt thrilled and privileged. Like most people, I knew a small amount about St. Francis and his work, but I wanted to know more. I realised that he is a man of the past, the present and the future. He led by example and hard work. His love for the World and everything in it was considerable. As well as caring for animals and the environment, he was a man of the community. Not only did he found the Franciscan Order, he taught the importance of love, harmony, sharing and to take only what we need. His work and teachings are hugely relevant today.
I have painted St. Francis in winter, at the dead of night, surrounded by his healing energy. He lights up our darkness and radiates peace, kindness, benevolence, harmony and humility.
